But nowadays, the notion of a specific dress code has blurred. For the most part, this is due to a change in lifestyle, a change in people’s outlook on the world. There are no strict requirements to dress for certain situations. And you can come to the theater not in an evening dress and a strict suit. But we can not say that this approach is devoid of logic.

Let’s look at exhibitions as an example. The dress code for an exhibition may depend on its subject, scale and the audience for which it is designed. At the exhibition of experimental art it would be strange to see a lady in an evening dress, and at the exhibition of scientific achievements – a young man in ripped jeans and sneakers.

So, let’s take a different route. We’ll just talk about the different types of dress code and when they may be appropriate. And you yourself will choose which clothes are more relevant for the event you’re going to.

Dress code for all occasions

White Tie.

Men wear tails, women wear long evening dresses, jewelry made of precious metals and natural stones, hairstyles, gloves up to the elbow and small handbags to complete the image. This dress code is considered the strictest, but it is appropriate at the most solemn events: presentation of national and international awards, major film awards, receptions in palaces. The dress code is appropriate after 8 p.m.

Black Tie.

Men wear tuxedos or high-quality elegant suits. Women wear long evening or “cocktail” dresses (depending on the format of the event: a formal evening reception or corporate party, a premiere at the theater or a family celebration). Such attire is appropriate after 6 p.m.

Formal.

This dress code does not differ from the Black Tie, but it is appropriate to use fashionable details and unusual cutting. The dress code is suitable for formal evening events.

Semiformal and Constabulary.

Deviations from the protocol are allowed. Suits and light sweaters are quite appropriate for men, “cocktail” dresses without fussy decorations, not lower than the middle of the calf and not higher than a palm above the knee are appropriate for women. The shorter the dress, the more closed the top should be. In summer, dresses can be bright. A light pantsuit will also be relevant. This style is suitable for corporate and family celebrations, dinner parties, cocktail parties.

A-5 (After five).

Dress code for different events, which start after five o’clock in the evening. Casual evening style. Cocktail dresses and formal suits are appropriate for women. The day dress is acceptable.

Casual.

It is a free format of casual wear. There are no strict prohibitions and restrictions; the clothes are chosen in accordance with the situation.

Smart Casual.

Casual style with a touch of the official style. Men: business suits, long-sleeve shirts, sweaters, turtlenecks, sports jackets, optional necktie. Women: slacks, pants or skirt, blouses, turtlenecks, sweaters, jackets or coats, boots or boots are acceptable. Emphasis should be placed on accessories.

Business casual.

In-between variant between a business suit and street casual clothes. Jeans, jersey or cotton shirts are acceptable (except some working situations). For men – semi-sport pants or classic military jackets, sandals are possible. For women – short Capri pants, open shoes. No stockings allowed in summer (except for some working situations and events).

Dressy Casual

Dress code for art exhibitions, premieres, semi-official parties. Often – designer clothes, unusual cutting and color solutions.

Festival attire.

The dress code for informal parties. If the theme is not declared or the organizers have any requests about the appearance of guests, guests should dress neutrally, but festively. For men – smart shirts with an open collar, blazers, a tie – if you wish. For women – cocktail dresses of minimal to medium length, smart tops with a skirt or pants.

Btr (Business Traditional) or undress.

A casual, traditional business suit. Dress code for business meetings, appointments, business events. Classical business suits are welcomed both for men and women.

These are the basic types of dress code for different situations and events. Depending on the type of exhibition, any of the above clothing options may be appropriate. As they say, the decision is up to you.

Do you have to dress up to go to an art museum?

The answer to this question is not as straightforward as you may think. It depends on the type of museum that you are going to visit. For example, if you are going to visit the Louvre in Paris, then it is a good idea to wear something nice. But if you are visiting a smaller art museum in your hometown, then dressing up might be considered unnecessary or even pretentious.
So if someone is planning on going to an art museum with their family and just wants a casual day out, they may not want to dress up too much; but if someone is attending an event at a very popular museum on a date, it might be worth dressing up.A “casual day out” is not the same as going to an event or a show at a very popular museum. It should be noted that there is no right answer here. If someone wants to dress up, then it might be worth doing so because they feel they will enjoy the experience.

Can you wear jeans to an art gallery?

The dress code for an art gallery varies depending on the type of art that is being displayed. If the gallery is displaying contemporary art, then it is appropriate to wear jeans. However, if the gallery is displaying fine art, then it would be appropriate to wear formal attire.
